History

1968  
Creation of the "Société Nationale d'Exploitation et de Distribution des Eaux".
 
  1968 to 1987
SONEDE employs hundreds of multidisciplinary engineers and technicians to produce, treat and distribute drinking water all over the country.

Setting up of structures and adequate management modes for water resources and supply of large urban centres with drinking water, the main projects being:

A 120 km long adduction to bring the waters from the Kasseb dam (north of Beja) to Tunis.

The Tunis - Cap Bon adduction.

The reinforcement of the networks of Bizerte, Béja, Sahel, Sfax, Gabès, Djerba and the regions of the centre of the country.

The elaboration of the Master Plan for the Waters of the North in order to transfer water from the North West to high consumption centres situated on the littoral of the country.

The reinforcement of transfer water facilities in the areas of Sfax and the South of Tunisia.

The achievement of the first brackish water desalination plant in Kerkennah in 1984.

The achievement of several drinking water supply projects in middle-sized urban centres and rural villages.

7 November 1987 up to now:

 

Tunisia has known, since November, 7th 1987 an outstanding development in the field of drinking water supply, particularly in rural areas supply, water conservation, improving water quality and customer services.

Drinking water supply in rural areas

The following programmes have been achieved:

National and regional rural development programmes.

Programmes of the National Solidarity Fund (FNS 26-26).

Presidential Programmes.

Water quality improvement

The following desalination projects have been fulfilled:

The brackish water desalination plant of Gabes.

The brackish water desalination plant of Zarzis.

The brackish water desalination plant of Djerba.

Water conservation

The 1990-2000 national strategy for water resource mobilisation and SONEDE's strategy for water conservation have been implemented.

Customer service improvement

Several actions have been undertaken including:

The creation of new districts in order to ensure nearer services to customers.

The development of facilities.

The rehabilitation of networks.

The improvement of reception.

The payment of new connection costs over an 8 - year period.

The simplification of procedures.
